Can I Get You Something?
You know the scene… you come in for the interview, introduce yourself, shake hands, and the interviewer asks you…”Can I get you something?”  This may be just friendly offer, or it could be the first question of the interview.

In their book, Best Answers to 202 Job Interview Questions, Daniel Porot and Frances Bolles Haynes discuss possible answers to this question, right or wrong.  In fact, for each hypothetical interview question, the authors set up a scenario, offer possible answers, then discuss how each of those answers could potentially affect the outcome of the interview.  It’s an excellent resource for job candidates.

For example, they suggest that requesting a sparkling mineral water with a twist of lime, or insisting that you only drink your own organically filtered natural spring water, might not be the best responses, at least in an initial interview.  Sometimes, interviewers ask this sort of question to see how sociable and convivial you are.

But don’t let it throw you.  Sometimes they’re just being hospitable.  It’s okay to say yes, or just “I’m fine, thanks.”  Trust me, the questions will get harder as the interview goes along.

Preparing for that all-important interview can help you feel more comfortable, and enable you to present yourself as a valuable professional.  I’m available to coach you through interview preparation.  If you want, we can review and update your resume, and even discuss salary negotiation techniques.

Let’s talk…
